Meet Spikes | Spikes Fishing

Mel Spikes, is a Botany Bay local who is passionate about all things fishing. As a kid, she often went fishing with her father and uncle but never really took up the passion. 

In 2016, she started hiring out a tinny from Como Marina in Sydney with a work mate. It was the start of something truly special. It was here in the mighty Georges River that she really learnt to fish. The tinny was equipped with an anchor and nothing more. Using a printed out map she began navigating the system, teaching herself to fish with bait & lures for Bream and Flathead. 

By 2018, she was hiring out the tinny nearly every fortnight and her younger brother convinced her to buy her very own boat. For the next year, her family was very protective of her using the boat and she relied on her younger brother to tow, launch and retrieve. 

In 2019 something happened. Well 3 things happened. Spikes was fishing on land at Foreshore Boat Ramp in Botany Bay when for the first time ever, she hooked up to a Kingfish. She didn't even know what a Kingfish was. It was a spectacular fight ending in a bust off along the oyster shelf. It was at this moment that she realised that there was SO much more to fishing. She booked a Kingfish charter for the following week and had a whole new world open up in front of her! Sounders, Rigs, Live Bait, Offshore, BIG FISH!

The problem now was, her overprotective family. Girls aren't supposed to go boating alone, its unheard of and unsafe!

Spikes convinced her family that she would only go fishing with a friend who knew how to do all the "Boat" stuff. 

After a few sessions, Spikes ventured out and had her first SOLO session. She never looked back. 

Spikes Fishing Australia was born January 2019.

Since then, Spikes has committed herself to fishing in all of her spare time, learning, inspiring and growing with the anglers around her. She is most passionate about providing detailed up to date information for the fishing community including fishing reports, education, experiences, support and guidance. She actively supports Sydney's local tackle shops and Australian Owned suppliers. 

Her dream is to one day work full time in the Fishing Industry traveling the world product testing and sharing her adventures to inspire current and future anglers!
